At Best Feeds Garden Centers, lawn care is one of our specialties and at our Wildwood Road and Babcock Blvd. locations we have many products to help.   Fall Lawn Care begins by answering some basic questions around when to begin and what steps should be taken.

Fall Seeding

Make sure you plant your grass seed at least 45 days before the first frost.  There are  3 main factors that effect fall growth:

Soil preparation is one of the three most important factors that impact successful germination. During autumn, grass seed can germinate most effectively because soil temperatures are still warm (around 60ºF). Another crucial piece of information to think about before seeding is the pH reading of your soil. When the pH of your soil is not balanced, grass struggles to grow. Getting the right grass seed mixture for your specific lawn is also one of the first and most important steps to seeding your lawn, no matter what time of the year you choose to seed it.

Maintaining proper moisture levels is also essential to the growth of your lawn. One reason fall is the best time of the year to seed your lawn is that your soil is able to better maintain a healthy moisture level. This is one of the main reasons why grass and so many other types of plants benefit from fall seeding.

While soil and moisture are vital, without the right amount of sunlight, it’s very difficult to promote healthy germination. fall provides the optimum amount of light for your lawn, thanks to Earth’s position at that time of year. The less intense sunshine also helps avoid the threat of excessive dryness your lawn and soil face during the late spring and hotter summer months.

Best Fertilizer for Fall

If your lawn always has dandelions and broadleaf weeds, such as chickweed, clover, wild onions, or thistle, use Green-Up Weed & Feed in the fall when these weeds are actively growing. This premium grade herbicide and lawn fertilizer combination controls weeds while feeding the lawn. Green-Up Weed & Feed will feed desirable grasses with 35% slow-release nitrogen fertilizer for up to 3 months and kill weeds down to the root.

From early September through late-November, fertilize your lawn with Winter Survival Fall Lawn Food. The high potassium formula helps promote deep rooting and contains nitrogen to help repair summer damage. If you spread Winter Survival early in the fall, apply it again in the first week of November to safeguard the lawn through the winter and enjoy greener grass early next spring.

Organic Control

The main difference between organic and synthetic products is that organics take loner to become effective.  Jonathan Green’s Organic Insect Control kills over 100 surface feeding insects such as chinch bugs, fleas, ticks and ants. This proprietary blend of natural plant oils repels crawling insects without synthetic toxins or the residue of non-organic ingredients. This product is safe to use around children and pets and will not harm the environment.

Plants produce oils that provide them with a natural defense against insects. Jonathan Green has combined these oils to create a product with a fresh, natural scent that kills destructive insects quickly, and has strong repellency characteristics to keep insects from coming back. Jonathan Green Organic Insect Control will not harm ladybugs, butterflies or earthworms and has no adverse effect on mammals, birds or fish.
